Communication and Language Frameworks
At Hatton, we believe every pupil has something to say. Our communication frameworks are designed to meet each child where they are, whether thy're developing early language, using symbols, or communicating through gesture and technology.
We use a wide range of evidence based approaches to support communication across all stages of development
PECS
PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) supports pupils initiating communication by exchanging picture cards to express wants, needs and ideas. It builds independence and lays the foundations for more complex language.
At Hatton we use PECS across all school environments to give our learners an immediate, functional voice. By using physical symbols, children quickly learn the power of communication and connection. As a child progresses through the PECS stages, we build their vocabulary from single items to full sentences, helping them confidently navigate their day and share their choices with staff and peers.
Makaton
Makaton combines signs, symbols and speech to give pupils multiple ways to understand and express themselves. Staff across the school are trained to use Makaton consistently throughout the day, not just in dedicated sessions.
By pairing signs and symbols with spoken words, we provide crucial visual clues that help our learners process language more easily. This inclusive approach significantly reduces communication frustration, empowers pupils to share their choices, and naturally supports the development of functional speech and confidence in everyday interactions.
AAC
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes a range of tools from low-tech communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices that are tailored to each pupils specific needs. We work closely with Speech and Language Therapists to ensure
A key part of our high tech toolkit includes Proloquo2go, a robust commination app used on iPads across the school. by embedding these specialised communication systems directly into daily routines, we ensure pupils can practice using their voices naturally, meaningfully, and with a growing independence throughout the entire school day.
